Uno Celebrates 60 Years of Chicago’s Original Deep
Dish Pizza and National Pizza Month!
In 1943, Chicago resident Ike Sewell invented Chicago’s
Original Deep Dish Pizza™ and opened the doors of
a restaurant called Pizzeria Uno (on the corner of Ohio
and Wabash Streets) in downtown Chicago. This year marks
the 60th anniversary of the beloved pizza and the founding
of Pizzeria Uno.
In honor of the occasion, Uno invites you to join us for
a number of local activities to celebrate our milestone
and say “thanks, Chicago!” for 60 wonderful
years.
- All dressed up. The restaurant
that started it all is getting dressed up for the big
occasion. Beginning October 1, stop by the original Pizzeria
Uno on Ike Sewell Way (29 E. Ohio Street at Wabash) day
or night to catch a glimpse of our birthday
building décor. (Décor visible through
October 31.)
- It’s Uno Day! Have a slice
of deep dish on us. Mayor Daley has declared October
4, 2003 as “Uno Day” in recognition of the
contributions Pizzeria Uno and Chicago-style deep dish
pizza have made to the city. To show our appreciation,
Pizzeria Uno will be giving away
2003 FREE slices of Uno’s famous Chicago-style deep
dish pizza. Stop by the original location on Saturday,
October 4, from 12-3pm for yours!
- Reserve a seat for an oven-side
chat. Hear the legendary Chicago-style deep dish
story and more about the Uno heritage firsthand through
a personal one-on-one press meeting
with Aaron Spencer, Chairman of Uno Restaurant
Corporation, and the man responsible for spreading Ike
Sewell’s incredible pizza worldwide. Sixty years
after the first Uno, Aaron’s still creating Chicago-style
deep dish pizza and creating new grill menu items at Uno’s
191 worldwide restaurants.
- All the Ingredients for Learning:
Uno and the Chicago Public Schools. In October,
Uno will announce a new partnership with the Chicago Public
Schools to pledge support to Chicago’s future. To
kick off the long-term partnership with our newly adopted
school, Uno will host the students for a series
of educational pizza maker parties at Pizzeria
Uno and Pizzeria Due. Uno President Paul MacPhail will
serve as “Principal for
a Day” through CPS’s annual program
and one lucky student will win the chance to become “Uno
Manager for a Day".
